Events

Every May, something shifts along the coast. Market stalls appear on squares that spent the winter quiet, a chef starts plating something local in front of a crowd, and a whole town smells faintly of grilled fish and fresh bread before lunch has even started. That is Autentica, and it is less a single event than a travelling celebration of everything the Riviera grows, catches and cooks.
What is Autentica?
Autentica is the Makarska Riviera’s Food and Wine Festival, a joint project between the City of Makarska and the municipalities along the coast. Rather than staying in one place, it moves from town to town, so Makarska, Podgora, Baška Voda, Brela and Tučepi each get their own day in the spotlight. The idea is simple: put the region’s small producers, family cooks and local chefs on the same stage, and let visitors taste the Riviera instead of just looking at it.

A market that tells the truth about where food comes from
At the centre of Autentica sits the Autentica Market, a lineup of local OPG producers selling exactly what they grow, press or bottle themselves. There is no theatre to it, just a table, a producer, and whatever came off their land that season. It is the kind of market where asking a question gets you a real answer, not a script.
Chefs, students, and one very serious cocktail
Alongside the market, Autentica brings show cooking to the town square, with chefs like David Skoko and Ivan Vukoja working local ingredients in front of whoever happens to be walking past. Students from the local vocational school get their own stage too, which says something about how seriously this coast takes passing the trade down. Wine tastings are running throughout, and a signature cocktail called “Makarana,” created to mark well over a century of organised tourism in the town, is poured with the kind of ceremony usually reserved for something much older.
A sweet corner and a slower kind of lunch
For anyone with a sweet tooth, the Sweet Corner is where traditional pastry making gets demonstrated by hand. Families are looked after too, with children’s workshops running alongside the adult programme, and a lighter “Autentica Fit” strand for anyone trying to balance out everything else on offer.
The festival also carries a quieter companion project called Dalmatinska marenda, where konobas and restaurants across the Riviera offer discounted traditional midday meals for the whole month the festival runs. It is a nice reminder that marenda, the Dalmatian midday meal, was never meant to be rushed, and for a few weeks every year, it gets treated that way again.
An award-winning festival
Autentica has been recognised with a “Simply the Best” award, reflecting its growing reputation as one of the Riviera’s signature culinary events.
Autentica is not trying to reinvent what this coast eats. It is just giving it a stage, a microphone, and a few extra weeks in May to be taken seriously. Follow the smell of grilled fish to the nearest town square, and you will probably find it.
