If you are looking for the perfect balance between an easy coastal walk and an introduction to the authentic Dalmatian hinterland, the Green Route is your ideal hiking starting point. The trail begins with a relaxed stroll toward Promajna before heading uphill into stone hamlets that feel frozen in time.
The star of this route is Dvori, a location with an atmosphere so powerful it served as a filming spot for Game of Thrones. The path then guides you through Bast, a village celebrated for its beautifully preserved traditional architecture, before looping back down to the lively shores of Baška Voda.
- Best combined with: A swim at Promajna beach on return, or a short drive north to Brela for an evening meal.
2. The yellow route — for the true karst explorers
Distance: 25.48 km
Route: Baška Voda → Promajna → Dvori → Babin zub → Veliki Zavod → Gradina → Baško Polje → Baška Voda
Difficulty: Demanding
Highlights: Veliki Zavod mountain pass, premier paragliding spot, panoramic island views
The Yellow Route is tailor-made for those who want to feel the raw power of Biokovo and spend a fully immersive day in the mountain. As the longest hiking trail in the area, it asks for stamina, but the rewards at altitude are worth every step.
The ascent climbs all the way to the impressive Veliki Zavod mountain pass. Up here, where the air thins and the Adriatic opens into a sweeping panorama with Brač and Hvar floating in the distance, you’ll instantly see why this is a favourite launchpad for paragliders. The descent takes you through the Babin zub rock formation and the cooling pine forests of Baško Polje back to the coast.
- Best combined with: An overnight stay in Baška Voda to recover, or an easy morning the following day at Makarska‘s seafront promenade.
3. The light blue route — family harmony and historic footsteps
Distance: 22.67 km
Route: Baška Voda → Promajna → Dvori → Veliko Brdo → Gradina → Bast → Baška Voda
Difficulty: Moderate
Highlights: Babin zub viewpoint, Gradina archaeological site, mountain shelter
Balancing natural beauty with historical storytelling, the Light Blue Route is ideal for couples and active families looking for a fulfilling day excursion. The defining highlight is the passage through Gradina, an ancient archaeological site that stands as a silent witness to centuries of life beneath the mountain.
The stone remnants of these old fortifications offer a perfect scenic break and a moment of genuine historical atmosphere, before the route guides you back to the sea via the slopes of Bast. If you’re interested in exploring more prehistoric sites nearby, Podgora and Tučepi both have remarkable burial mounds worth a separate visit.
- Don‘t miss: The mountain shelter along the route, a rare chance to experience the true mountaineering spirit of Biokovo without committing to the longer summit trails.
4. The dark blue route — wild aromas and hidden resting spots
Distance: 24.33 km
Route: Baška Voda → Promajna → Dvori → Babin zub → Veliko Brdo → Dobra voda → Dvori → Promajna → Baška Voda
Difficulty: Moderate to demanding
Highlights: Smokvena resting spot, Dobra voda spring, cinematic Dvori
The Dark Blue hiking Route takes you through the rugged heart of the sub-Biokovo karst, focusing on places that hold profound peace. The trail weaves through low Mediterranean macchia: wild sage, immortelle, and pine needles accompany you the entire way.
The place to stop and breathe is the Smokvena resting spot, where the only sound is the occasional cricket. The loop also passes Dobra voda, a natural mountain spring that sustained local villages for generations: a reminder that long before Baška Voda became a holiday destination, people survived here by reading the mountain.
- Best combined with: A fresh seafood dinner on the Baška Voda waterfront afterward, or a short evening drive to Brela.
5. The red route — the ultimate ridge challenge
Distance: 9.18 km
Route: Baška Voda → Pokin potok → Topići → Gornji Kričak → Brela → Baška Voda
Difficulty: Demanding
Highlights: Game of Thrones filming location (Greben), stone village of Topići, panoramic coastal loop through Brela
The Red hiking Route is an exceptional choice for hikers who want to dive deep into the traditional stone heritage of the region alongside a real physical challenge. The trail heads out from Baška Voda via Pokin potok toward Greben, another dramatic filming location from Game of Thrones, before climbing steadily to Topići, a beautifully preserved old village ideal for slowing down and looking closely at how stone architecture has endured here for centuries.
Continuing past Gornji Kričak, the path wraps around into the upper slopes of Brela, treating you to sweeping views of the turquoise Adriatic below. From there, a gentle descent brings you back to your starting point in Baška Voda.
- Best combined with: A swim at one of Brela‘s famous pebble coves on the way back; you’ll have earned it.
Tips for a safe journey beneath the peaks
- Footwear is everything: Leave smooth-soled city shoes behind. The Biokovo karst is sharp and unforgiving: proper hiking boots are a must.
- Hydration is key: Even in spring or autumn, the sun reflecting off white limestone drains energy quickly. Carry at least 2 litres per person.
- Start early: The best light for photography and the most comfortable temperatures for hiking are in the early morning hours.
- Check locally: The tourist office in Baška Voda maintains updated trail condition information throughout the season. Offices in Makarska and Brela can also help.
