A webcam, a Makarska Riviera beach and a lot of ordinary days
Plenty of webcams point at a car park or a crossroads. The ones in Baška Voda point at a curve of pale pebbles, a line of pine trees and water the colour of sea glass, and in 2014 the world noticed. Cameras are live today as well; check them out here.
What happened in June 2014
EarthCam, one of the best-known webcam portals in the world, picks its favourite live cameras every month. In June 2014, a camera in Baška Voda, run by the Croatian portal LiveCamCroatia, made that list of ten, and Croatian media reported it as the best webcam of the month. According to the news agency Hina, the live stream of the town and marina was chosen from around ten thousand cameras worldwide, in the company of cameras in San Diego, Finland, Spain and Greece.
The Baška Voda Tourist Board, for its part, notes that in 2014 the view from the webcam at Nikolina beach was proclaimed one of the most beautiful in the world.
To be fair to the competition, the judges were not only admiring scenery. EarthCam’s panel looks at image quality, originality of content, and technical achievement. A good camera helped. But it helps even more to have something worth filming.
The beach behind the lens
Nikolina is located in Baška Voda, named after the town’s patron saint, St Nicholas the Traveller, whose statue stands on the pier between the beach and the harbour. It was recognised as a tourist attraction as early as the start of the 20th century. In the 1930s, the town’s embellishment society planted the line of pines that still shades the shore.
The beach has held the Blue Flag since 2006, and in 2008 it received the Blue Flower, Croatia’s top national tourism award, as the best-kept beach on the Croatian Adriatic.
Keeping this paradise pristine is a shared effort, and preserving its natural beauty for the future relies on all of us. Simple steps make a massive difference – like holding onto your trash until you find a bin, and making sure cigarette butts never end up buried in the sand or washed into the crystal-clear sea.

Then the Daily Mail joined in
In 2015, the Daily Mail published its list of the ten most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean. Baška Voda took the eighth spot, on a list that also included Navagio in Greece and Monterosso in Cinque Terre. Not bad for a small town on the Makarska Riviera! And this isn’t the last time some of the Riviera beaches were named best, prettiest, most beautiful.
Why this view keeps working
A webcam is a postcard nobody gets to stage. It shows the bay as it is on a quiet Tuesday morning, on a crowded Sunday in August, or on a bright afternoon in October. A view that stays beautiful in all of those versions has earned its reputation. Several live cameras still watch the beach and the harbour, and you can find them on webcam sites such as Windy.
